Lens Artists Challenge – Only One Picture

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It has two other names however, names that it had long before it was renamed after the Surveyor General of India, Sir George Everest. Although to be fair to Sir George he did object to this typical act of British Empire Colonialism.

Its Tibetan name is Chomolungma, meaning “Goddess Mother of the World”, and its Nepali name is Sagarmatha, meaning “Goddess of the Sky.”

These names perhaps better suit its status as a place of pilgrimage for the mountain climber and mountain lover. Hill walkers who will never climb it still want to visit this place and see the highest mountain in the world “with their own eyes”.

I went on that pilgrimage myself many years ago to see it with my own eyes and pay my respects to the highest of them all, the Mountain Mother of the World.

I wrote a longer post about my journey to Everest and what it meant to me and you can read that Here if you have the time.

This weeks Lens Artists Challenge is on the theme ‘Only One Picture’ and has been set by Leya. And here is my one picture of Mount Everest, looking glorious against the clear blue morning sky.

  1. That’s a wonderful photo, Jim 🙂 Mount Everest is more than just a tall mountain; it shows how strong nature can be, pushes people to their limits, and is part of an environment that’s changing over time. Imagine standing at the top of this massive mountain, where it’s hard to breathe and you can see the curve of the Earth. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx

  2. A fantastic picture of Chomolungma! I understand your fascination and awe in front of this mountain. How great you have had so many opportunities to hike in beautiful areas and that you shared a piece with us, Jim. You must be grateful to have had and having such opportunities in life.
I have been to Tibet and Nepal too, but not for hiking. And I have absolutely no pictures like yours!Thank you for joining in!
